My Lord:-
In continuation of my despatch No.144 of
July 13th with regard to the status of British Com-
panies registered in Hongkong, but promoted by Chin-
ese subjects, I have the honour to forward copies of
two further despatches and enclosures, dated 1st and
6th instant, which I have received from Her Majesty's
Consul at Canton on the question.
In view of the great abuses to which the
recognition of such Companies, as entitled to Brit-
ish protection in Chine, would give rise, Mr. Mansfield
suggested to the Hongkong Government, in his letter
of August 8th, that a modification of the Companies'
Ordinance night meet the case. The Colonial Secre-
tary replied on September 5th forwarding copy of the
Attorney General's opinion on the subject, maintain-
